In 1871, Horse-drawn streetcars began service in Denver, and in 1888, the Denver Tramway Company began cable car service. In 1901, the Tramway Power facility opened, in the building where REI is now located. Many of the business and retail areas in the Highlands neighborhoods along 32nd and Lowell and down Tennyson Street all had trolley lines that extended past them.
One major trolley line extended up from Downtown, west on 32nd Street to Perry, North on Perry, west on 35th Street to Tennyson, up Tennyson to 46th Street, and on west to Lakeside.
The Red Trolley is located at what was believed to be a Trolley turn-around at 32nd and Clay. In 1950 Streetcar service ended, although there have been several proposals to bring them back |
